Third Way joins online push for clean energy investments
The centrist Democratic group launches campaign supporting moderate senators
Fresh off its six-figure online ad campaign to defeat Nina Turner in last week’s primary election in Ohio, the centrist think tank Third Way is now running Facebook ads touting “investments in clean energy technologies.” Launched earlier this week around the same time as the Senate finally advanced infrastructure packages that include provisions to combat climate change and proliferate clean energy, their new campaign lauds the work of Sens. John Hickenlooper, Joe Manchin, Mark Kelly, Martin Heinrich, and Ron Wyden.
Third Way has so far spent between $5,000 to $7,500 on this campaign, which mostly target adults and particularly women aged 25 - 44 in the senators’ respective states. The ads all point to a Third Way memo that argues that “the BID is a BIG Down Payment on Clean Energy.”
Third Way joins a slew of other advocacy and policy groups using Facebook ads to push for clean energy, including Advanced Energy Works, Potential Energy Coalition, the American Council on Renewable Energy, the League of Conservation Voters, and others. While Third Way is by our count among the first centrist groups to use Facebook ads to promote clean energy, they’re following a familiar messaging tactic: creating “good-paying jobs while cutting pollution.” One of LCV’s most recent Facebook ad campaigns uses a similar construction, as does Advanced Energy Works’ ads in Virginia.
It’s not yet clear how much money Third Way intends to spend on their new clean energy ad campaign, but as Democrats go home to sell the infrastructure packages they’re fighting to pass, we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on any new campaigns.
